About
Filling with Emptiness: The Void and Spatiality in Sung-Duk Hong's Work
Artist Sung-Duk Hong reinterprets the void, often perceived as a deficiency in photography, as a central element of his work. His void is not merely an empty space but a deliberately constructed visual space. Unlike the harmonious and balanced void of traditional East Asian paintings, Hong's void possesses a flat yet abstract quality. Through this approach, he deconstructs photography's conventional attributes of time and space, creating a unique visual language.
Notably, Hong's void functions as an active space that expands the viewer's imagination. By altering the size and placement of objects, he generates new visual experiences, allowing the meaning of his work to be infinitely extended through the viewer’s interpretation. This void transcends the absence of a background and becomes a shared artistic experience created collaboratively between the artist and the audience.
Ultimately, Sung-Duk Hong's work explores the significance of voids, expanding the boundaries of photographic art and presenting a new visual language.
